The Digital Humanities: Visualizing Art in New Mediums
Cluster Dendrogram
This chart, called a Cluster Dendrogram, was created using free data visualization software called RAWGraphs. This visualization is used to show hierarchical relationships, and it required only four fields of my dataset to create: Country, State or Region, City, and Artist Name. Below you can see a breakdown of where each artist was born, starting with the country on the left, then the state or region, the city, and then the artist's name on the right. Notice how the broadest categories are on the left and narrow to more specific categories on the right. With this visualization, you can get an idea of how many artists were from one country compared to another, which artists are from the same country, or which major cities were home to the most artists.

Note that location information for the artists at the bottom of the chart was unavailable.
